The Minnesota Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (MAFCS) is a scientific and educational association of family and consumer sciences professionals. The Association is an affiliate of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) and thus supports the mission of AAFCS to improve the quality of life for individuals and families. The MAFCS acts through its members, and in cooperation with other organizations, to affect the optimum balance between families and their environments. For more information, the MAFCS brochure is available here (pdf file).

The mission of the MAFCS is accomplished by offering its membership:

  • mechanisms for supporting and unifying efforts of family and consumer sciences professionals;
  • processes for developing and implementing member-set goals;
  • opportunities for continuing professional development;
  • methods for disseminating new knowledge and the results of current research and of facilitating the discussion of current issues;
  • systems for maintaining and improving standards of professionalism;
  • assistance in identifying and studying trends and issues that affect families;
  • interactions with other agencies and organizations on common concerns;

We offer the public:

  • leadership in responding to, and identifying alternative solutions to, family concerns;
  • mechanisms for communicating public interests on family issues to MAFCS members;
  • access to the expertise of MAFCS members;
  • opportunities to gain knowledge that will enable individuals and families to become active participants in the process of developing a balance between families and their environments.

The MAFCS functions on local, state and national levels in an atmosphere of social concern, professional responsibility and democratic representation.
